Once my daughter turned four, the minute she saw the phone she was gone. Moment lost.

1. Don't say ‘look at me!’

...or be still. Or sit down. Or any direction what so ever. I have found in my many years of photographing children as soon as you say anything, the moment you are so keen to capture will be gone. So leave them be. Just quietly take out your phone, open the app, and...

2. Have patience

I know this is the hardest part, but it's 99% of the process. Give them a moment. Wait patiently and observe till they are naturally in the right moment. They will look up again, they will turn around, and they may even make it a better moment. Don’t rush it. Or it will never happen.

3. Laugh

More times than not, kids do something in a flash. Want them to repeat it? Laugh.

Seriously.

Natural human behavior dictates that positive reinforcement will strengthen the behavior. Laugh and your kid will do it again for another positive response from you.

***I apologize now - often it will happen again and again and again.... But it works for the picture.
